FACTS

Larimar is a beautiful, rare gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic. It is a variety of the mineral pectolite, and its blue color is caused by the presence of copper.

The only known source of Larimar is a single mining area in the country, making it one of the most sought-after gemstones in the world.

The exact process of Larimar formation is believed to have occurred over a period of millions of years.

It is thought that Larimar was formed during the Cretaceous period, approximately 70-100 million years ago.

The mining of Larimar is a difficult and labor-intensive process, but it is also an important source of income for many families in the Dominican Republic.

When a potential Larimar deposit inside the mining hole is found, the mining process begins. First, the area is carefully excavated to reveal any visible Larimar deposits.

Next, the rock is chipped away with hammers and chisels to reveal the gemstone. This is a slow and meticulous process, as the miners must be careful not to damage the delicate Larimar.

Once the Larimar has been extracted, it is brought to the surface and carefully cleaned and polished. This process can take days, as each piece of Larimar must be handled with care.

The finished product is a stunning gemstone that is prized for its beauty and rarity.

Due to its limited supply and popularity among collectors, Larimar has become incredibly valuable, with some specimens selling for up to $100 per gram (easily matching the price of gold; that’s why Larimar is sometimes called the ‘Blue Gold‘).

EXPERIENCE

Larimar is typically found at depths of around 300 ft (100 m) to 900 ft (300 m), and extracting it requires a great deal of skill and expertise. Mining tunnels are hand-built mostly using only basic tools like pickaxes and shovels, and teams of 8-20 people work tirelessly to extract rough Larimar from the earth.

The mining of Larimar is a difficult and challenging endeavour, requiring knowledge, patience and perseverance to be successful.

Despite the challenges, the rewards of successful Larimar mining are well worth the effort.

Not everyone who sets out to mine for this rare gemstone is able to find it, and many give up when their patience or funds run out. In fact, there have been many instances in which Larimar mining investors have exhausted their resources without finding a single vein of Larimar, or have faced personal, technical and engineering difficulties that have brought their operations to a halt. Once mining operations cease, an abandoned mine site can deteriorate rapidly, often within a matter of weeks. Restoring such a site to a usable condition requires substantial investment and effort.
